The integration of AI in our daily lives can provide substantial support in many contexts, ranging from medicine to education, improving the performance of both sides in terms of knowledge and resources. Although the traditional approach in creating AI systems focuses on the functionalities and high performance of their models, modern society is witnessing a shift from mere automation to augmentation and collaboration, where AI and humans enhance and learn from each other. A step forward in this direction is enabling humans and AI to work symbiotically together. Symbiosis can be described as a consequence of the human-AI partnership, where human intelligence serves to improve AI systems, and vice versa, through a bidirectional relationship of mutual exchange. This workshop aims to explore how humans and AI systems can effectively collaborate, learn from each other, and co-adapt symbiotically. Through discussions and the exchange of perspectives, the workshop has the goal of investigating the key components of the interaction between the two parties. [MUC 2025] Call for Short Paper ACs

The Short Papers track at the “Mensch und Computer” (MuC) conference is looking for ACs (Associate Chairs). Please consider applying using the Google Form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeW1zkASWoUlIN_n7gwsmPDrFR4N-Hl432… Associate Chairs are key to coordinating the reviewing process and ensuring the rigor and quality of published MuC research. Volunteering to serve as an AC holds distinct potential to shape the future of our field. We believe that the Short Papers track provides particular opportunities for junior peers in our research community to gain some experience in managing the peer reviewing process. Hence, we invite motivated PhD students and early-career researchers with first reviewing experience to volunteer as ACs. If you can think of any students or colleagues who might benefit from this opportunity, please consider forwarding this invitation to them. As an AC, you would: * lead the review process for 3-5 short papers (max. 6 pages) * assign two external reviewers to each paper * moderate a discussion between the reviewers * provide a meta-review including a recommendation for the paper Everything to do with the reviewing process will be done virtually in the time period from early June until early July. The goal of the Doctoral Symposium is to provide a supportive setting in which PhD students can present and receive feedback on their research. During the symposium, PhD students will interact closely with established researchers in the field, receive feedback on their research, and get advice on managing their research. The symposium will also help participants to establish a network with their peers in the field of software architecture. The program will feature a keynote that will shed light on establishing yourself within the software architecture community and beyond. The technical scope of the Doctoral Symposium is that of ECSA 2025, as represented by the topics in the ECSA 2025 Call for Papers CfP. Besides, we particularly encourage submissions that demonstrate that diversity in gender, culture, religion, country, etc. is a key factor for success and innovation in software architecture. We encourage submissions from PhD students at any stage of their research. Based on the submissions, the program committee will invite the PhD students to give presentations of their PhD research and to interact with senior as well as other junior researchers. SUBMISSION To participate in the Doctoral Symposium, the contribution needs to be submitted by the submission deadline consisting of two parts: a research summary paper and a letter of recommendation. The summary research paper should be authored by the student as a sole author. Research summary paper (max 8 pages) The research summary paper must be formatted according to the Springer LNCS style http://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-6-793341-0 (page limit includes references and appendixes) and should cover the following aspects: • the research problem to be solved and its relevance in the software architecture field; • a discussion of related work explaining why the research problem has not been solved yet; • the scientific methods used to tackle the research problem; • an outline of the proposed solution; • the expected results; • a plan for the evaluation of results; and • a critical reflection on the work, including open questions and challenges that the PhD student meets in his/her work, and that can be discussed with the senior colleagues. The submitted paper will be evaluated by the Doctoral Symposium Program Committee, and the following selection criteria will be used: • The originality of the proposed research, the novelty of the research approach, and relevance to ECSA; and • the quality of the submission, including clarity, precision, and adequacy of the problem statement and critical reflection of the work, in relation to the PhD student’s study stage. Letter of Recommendation (max 1 page) A recommendation letter written by (one of) the advisor(s). The letter should include the name of the candidate, an appreciation of the PhD research (and why it would benefit from being discussed at the Doctoral Symposium), the status of the research, and an expected date for the dissertation submission. There's a growing interest in quantitatively analysing clinical images through techniques like Positron Emission Tomography, Computerised Tomography, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging, particularly in the realms of texture analysis and radiomics. Through machine and deep learning advancements, researchers can glean insights to enhance the discovery of therapeutic tools, bolster diagnostic decisions, and aid in the rehabilitation process. However, the huge volume of available data may intensify the diagnostic effort, exacerbated by high inter/intra-patient variability, diverse imaging techniques, and the necessity to incorporate data from multiple sensors and sources, thus giving rise to the well-documented domain shift issue. To tackle these challenges, radiologists and pathologists employ Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) systems, which assist in analysing biomedical images. These systems mitigate or eradicate difficulties arising from inter- and intra-observer variability, ensuring consistent assessments of the same region by the same physician at various times and across different physicians, thanks to adept algorithms. Additionally, significant issues such as delayed or restricted data access, driven by privacy, security, and intellectual property concerns, pose considerable hurdles. Consequently, researchers are increasingly exploring the use of synthetic data, both for model training and for simulating scenarios not observed in real life. Furthermore, the emergence of foundation models, such as Vision Transformers and large multimodal models, represents a paradigm shift in medical image analysis. These models, pre-trained on vast datasets, demonstrate remarkable adaptability across various tasks, including segmentation, classification, and multi-modal integration. Their ability to generalise effectively offers promising avenues for addressing domain shift issues and integrating heterogeneous data sources, enhancing diagnostic and predictive accuracy. This workshop aims to provide a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in biomedical image processing, leveraging machine learning, deep learning, artificial intelligence, and radiomics features. Emphasis is placed on practical applications, including potential solutions to address domain shift issues, the utilisation of synthetic images to augment CAD systems, and the integration of foundation models into clinical workflows. Ultimately, the aim is to explore how these techniques can seamlessly integrate into the conventional medical image processing workflow, encompassing image acquisition, retrieval, disease detection, prediction, and classification. TOPICS The workshop calls for submissions addressing, but not limited to, the following topics: - Machine and Deep Learning techniques for image analysis (i.e., segmentation of cells, tissues, organs, lesions; classification of cells, diseases, tumours, etc.) - Image Registration Techniques - Image Preprocessing Techniques (e.g., noise reduction, enhancement of contrast) - Image-based 3D reconstruction - Computer-Aided Detection and Diagnosis Systems (CADs) to support clinicians in identifying pathological conditions - Radiomics and Artificial intelligence for personalised medicine - Machine and Deep Learning as tools to support medical diagnoses and decisions - Image retrieval (e.g., context-based retrieval, lesion similarity) - Advanced architecture for biomedical image remote processing, elaboration and transmission - 3D Vision, Virtual, Augmented and Mixed Reality application for remote surgery - Image processing techniques for privacy-preserving AI in medicine. - Generation and utilisation of synthetic medical images for model training and validation - Foundation models (e.g., Vision Transformers, GPT-like architectures) for medical image analysis and multi-modal data integration - Techniques for evaluating the reliability and robustness of synthetic data in clinical scenarios - Ethical and Regulatory Aspects in AI-Driven Medical Imaging - Frameworks for ethical AI development and deployment in healthcare. - Addressing biases and ensuring fairness in AI-driven diagnostic systems. - Compliance with regulatory standards for AI-based medical devices - Addressing the transparency issue with explainable AI models in clinical practice. In order to ensure that AI systems are robust, fair and in line with human values, it is crucial to develop methods that enhance their resilience across multiple dimensions, such as reliability, accountability, fairness and ethical integrity. A number of challenges need to be addressed to guarantee resilient AI. These include the need to balance human control and automation to ensure that AI systems remain intuitive, transparent and trustworthy, while adapting to user preferences and needs. Robustness and reliability are critical concerns, requiring mechanisms to detect and mitigate functional and non-functional defects, such as errors, biases and vulnerabilities, to maintain essential properties such as safety and accuracy. Moreover, fairness must be addressed within ML pipelines, embedding techniques that promote inclusivity and unbiased decision-making to prevent discrimination and reinforce social responsibility. Another pressing issue is the verification, validation, and testing of AI models; while advances in AI and search-based software engineering have enabled automated test case generation and validation, empirical studies are still needed to investigate AI defects and their impact on system performance. Furthermore, ensuring high-quality data is a fundamental challenge since effective data profiling, imputation, and anomaly detection must be developed to handle missing values, outliers, and inconsistences, improving overall AI model performance and reliability. The RAISE workshop brings together researchers and practitioners to address challenges including data quality, privacy protection, human-centered AI design, and the validation of machine learning systems. RAISE promotes interdisciplinary discussion to explore innovative techniques and empirical studies for building AI systems that are secure, interpretable, and inclusive.
