CAiSE 2024 features a Research Project Exhibition (RPE@CAiSE'24) where researchers and
practitioners can present their ongoing research projects (e.g., Horizon or ERC projects,
national grants) in the context of Information Systems Engineering. The main objective of this
call is to serve as a forum where presenters can disseminate the intermediate results of their
projects or get feedback about research project proposals being developed. The exhibition
will also provide a warm environment to find potential research partners, foster existing
relationships, and discuss research ideas.
To participate in the RPE@CAiSE'24, the authors should submit a short paper (5-8 pages)
showcasing the project, including the participants, the main objectives of the project and
relevant results obtained so far (or expected results in the case of project proposals). Each
submission will be peer-reviewed on the relevance of the submitted paper in the context of
CAiSE 2024. If the paper is accepted, the authors will be invited to register for the conference
to present their work at the Research Projects Exhibition session at CAiSE 2024.
The accepted contributions will be proposed for publication by CEUR proceedings using the
1-column CEUR-ART style. In addition, the authors of the most influential project presented
at the RPE@CAiSE'24 will receive an award distinguishing their contribution as the "Most
Influential Project of the Research Project Exhibition @CAiSE'24".
RESEARCH PROJECTS REQUIREMENTS
For the Research Projects Exhibition, we solicit submissions of projects related to the topics
of CAiSE that meet the following criteria:
• Projects funded by the European Union, by national or local funding organisations, or even
by individual universities and industries.
• Projects focused on fundamental research, applied research or more industry-oriented.
• Research projects carried out by an international consortium of partners or by a national
research team.
• Research statements for future projects concerning the Information Systems Engineering
community.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Papers should be submitted via Easychair
(https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=caise2024) by selecting the "Research
Projects Exhibition". Each submission of a research project should include:
• The project's full name, acronym, duration (from-to), participants, funding agency and URL.
• Names of presenter(s) and main contributors.
• Abstract and keywords.
• Summary of project objectives and expected tangible outputs.
• The relevance of the project (or one of its work packages) to the topics of the International
Conference on Advanced Information Systems Engineering.
• If the project is ongoing: summary of current status and intermediate results.
All submissions should be 5 to 8 pages long and be formatted as a 1-column CEUR-ART style
(templates available at https://ceur-ws.org/Vol-XXX/). An intention to submit should be
performed one week before the deadline, including the full name of the project, the authors'
name and the abstract.
Each submission will be reviewed by at least two members of the Program Committee. In case
of disagreement, a third member of the Program Committee will review the submission. The
Program Committee will comprise international researchers with expertise in the field.
ATTENDANCE AND PRESENTATION
During the Research Projects Exhibition session, the authors of accepted contributions will
present the research project. Details about the format of the session and instructions to
prepare the presentation will be given to authors after the acceptance notification. At least
one author of each submission accepted for the Research Projects Exhibition must register
and attend the conference to present the work. The author needs a full registration to present
the research project.

SPECIAL SESSION DESCRIPTION

The fast development of Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and
Mixed Reality (MR) solutions over the last few years are transforming how
people interact, work, and communicate. The eXtended Reality (XR) term
encloses all those immersive technologies that can shift the boundaries
between digital and physical worlds to realize the metaverse. According to
tech companies and venture capitalists, the metaverse will be a
super-platform that convenes sub-platforms: social media, online video
games, and ease-of-life apps, all accessible through the same digital space
and sharing the same digital economy. Inside the metaverse, virtual worlds
will allow avatars to carry out all human endeavours, including creation,
display, entertainment, social, and trading. Thus, the metaverse will
evolve how users interact with brands, intellectual properties, health
services, cultural heritage, and each other things on the Internet. A user
could join friends to play a multiplayer game, watch a movie via a
streaming service and then attend a university course precisely the same as
in the real world.
The metaverse development will require new software architecture that will
enable decentralized and collaborative virtual worlds. These self-organized
virtual worlds will be permanent and will require maintenance operations.
In addition, it will be necessary to design an efficient data management
system and prevent privacy violations. Finally, the convergence of physical
reality, virtually enhanced, and an always-on virtual space highlighted the
need to rethink the actual paradigms for visualization, interaction, and
sharing of digital information, moving toward more natural, intuitive,
dynamically customizable, multimodal, and multi-user solutions.
This special session aims to focus on exploring how the realization of the
metaverse can transform certain application domains such us: (i)
healthcare, in which the metaverse solutions can, for instance, improve the
communication between patients and physicians; (ii) cultural heritage, with
potentially more effective solutions for tourism guidance, site
maintenance, and heritage object conservation; and (iii) industry, where to
enable data-driven decision making, smart maintenance, and overall asset
optimisation.

SUBMISSION AND DECISIONS

Authors should prepare an Abstract (1 - 2 pages) that clearly indicates the
originality of the contribution and the relevance of the work. The Abstract
should include the title of the paper, names and affiliations of the
authors, an abstract, keywords, an introduction describing the nature of
the problem, a description of the contribution, the results achieved and
their applicability.
As an alternative to the traditional abstract, it is possible to submit a
Graphical Abstract. For further information, please see here:

When the first review process has been completed, authors receive a
notification of either acceptance or rejection of the submission. If the
abstract has been accepted, the authors can prepare a full paper.
The format for the full paper is identical to the format for the abstract
except for the number of pages: the full paper has a required minimum
length of five (5) pages and a maximum of six (6) pages.
Full Papers will be reviewed by the Technical Program Committee. Authors of
accepted full papers must submit the final paper version according to the
deadline, register for the workshop, and attend to present their papers.
The maximum length for final papers is 6 pages.
All contributions will be peer-reviewed and acceptance will be based on
quality, originality and relevance. Accepted papers will be submitted for
inclusion into IEEE Xplore Digital Library.
Submissions must be written in English and prepared according to the IEEE

We will consider two different types of submissions:
- Regular papers will be up to 10 pages (excluding references) and will report original research on how cybersecurity and education can support Academia and Industry to reduce the gap between demand (workplace, recruitment) and supply (qualification, training);
- Extended Abstracts will be up to 4 pages (excluding references) and will report novel ideas about the application of the role of cybersecurity education in Academia and Industry.
Both types of submissions, if accepted, will be part of the workshop proceedings (CEUR-WS).

in the field of software reuse research and technology. ICSR is a premier event aiming to
present the most recent advances and breakthroughs in the area of software reuse and to
promote an intensive and continuous exchange among researchers and practitioners.
The guiding theme of this edition is Sustainable Software Reuse.
We now invite submissions for Late-Breaking Results (LBR) and Journal First.
LATE-BREAKING RESULTS
LBR submissions will be peer reviewed and the accepted ones will be included in the
conference proceedings volume to be published by Springer in the LNCS series. An LBR
submission may also contain innovative ideas that are being explored and have already shown
some promising results. LBR submissions are expected to address one or more of the
topics covered in the regular call for papers

LBR submissions should be no longer than 12 pages (including references) following the

be written in English.
• The article has not been presented at, and is not under consideration for, journal-first tracks

Science and technology are increasingly intertwined with our societal
fabric. This transformation profoundly affects the education of new
generations, who require access to cutting-edge knowledge in the STEAM
disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics).
The STEAM framework is gaining global adoption, all over the world
instructional designers, technologists and scientists are conducting
research on the implementation of STEAM education. Its application is
diverse and spans all levels of education.
In this context, technology plays a pivotal role. Therefore, it is
imperative to develop strategies and mechanisms through which
researchers, experts from various knowledge domains, and educators can
facilitate participatory, interactive, sensory, and experimental
activities based on STEAM in which students can actively engage.
With this purpose in mind, our proposal seeks to extend a warm
invitation to researchers and professionals worldwide who are engaged in
scientific and technological advancements. We highly value the potential
for development that can be harnessed in classrooms across various
educational levels.
Additionally, we provide a scientific and academic platform aimed at
disseminating best practices in STEAM education. Our forum emphasizes
outstanding teaching practices in MATHEMATICS, AI, ROBOTICS, HCI, and
SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT that align with the global context of STEAM and
leverage technology to enhance learning across diverse educational

Recent developments in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and meta-design
challenge the understanding of the concept of “end user”.
The 8th edition of this workshop aims to critically differentiate,
dissect, and deepen the roles, experiences, and demands of end users by
inviting contributions from different perspectives.
The workshop invites contributions to explore the following fundamental
issues:
- Re-conceptualizing the multi-faceted roles that end users can play.
- Investigating how end users are evolving into active participants in
the design and development through frameworks (such as meta-design) that
encourage creation, modification, and evolution in individual and group
activities.
- Understanding the skills and literacies (e.g., computational fluency)
that end users need to acquire to be successful contributors (e.g.,
education, after-school clubs, etc.).
- Envisioning future scenarios and possibilities for end user roles and
experiences in the context of emerging technologies and cultural changes.
- Understanding the design trade-offs associated with balancing the
potential value of end-user contributions with the necessary effort to
ensure that end users will be motivated to contribute over long periods
of time.
Participants from academia, industry, and user communities are invited
to share their ideas, insights, and experiences to increase our
collective understanding and approach towards end users in the digital age.
Topics of discussion may include (but will not be limited to):
- Analysis of the use and historical development of the concept of “end
user”
- Can meta-design frameworks facilitate and empower end users in
becoming designers, shaping and adapting systems to their needs?
- What are the major responsibilities for end users in "end-user

age — how will this change the concept of "end user" and “learning with

- How can the division between professional developers and end users be

Abstract and Topics
Following the successful series of PATCH workshops, PATCH 2024 will be
again the meeting point between state-of-the-art cultural heritage research
and personalization – using any kind of technology, while focusing on
ubiquitous and adaptive scenarios, to enhance the personal experience in
cultural heritage sites. The workshop is aimed at bringing together,
physically and/or virtually, researchers and practitioners who are working
on various aspects of cultural heritage and are interested in exploring the
potential of state of the art mobile technology (onsite as well as online)
to enhance the CH visit experience. The expected result of the workshop is
a sharing and discussing novel ideas and creating a multidisciplinary
research agenda that will inform future research directions and hopefully,
forge some research collaborations.
Motivation
Cultural heritage (CH) has traditionally been a privileged area for
personalization research, as highlighted by the many H2020 calls on this
topic. Visitors come to cultural heritage sites willing to experience and
learn new things, usually without a clear idea of what to expect. CH sites
are typically rich in objects and information; much more than the visitor
can absorb during the limited time of a visit. Cultural Heritage
exploration and fruition are central aspects to value the richness of the
territory and the history of our countries. The research on this topic is
very active and continuously expanding towards new topics, such as the
integration of cultural and natural heritage exploration, the extension to
novel interaction means (e.g., haptic user interfaces and IoT), ambient
intelligence, etc.
We invite cultural heritage professionals and researchers to join us to
discuss findings and trends on personalisation of cultural heritage in the
broadest sense, from online and remote cultural access to onsite visit,
from individuals to groups, from tangible to virtual and robotic mediation.

The fast development of Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and
Mixed Reality (MR) solutions over the last few years are transforming how
people interact, work, and communicate. The eXtended Reality (XR) term
encloses all those immersive technologies that can shift the boundaries
between digital and physical worlds to realize the metaverse. According to
tech companies and venture capitalists, the metaverse will be a
super-platform that convenes sub-platforms: social media, online video
games, and ease-of-life apps, all accessible through the same digital space
and sharing the same digital economy. Inside the metaverse, virtual worlds
will allow avatars to carry out all human endeavours, including creation,
display, entertainment, social, and trading. Thus, the metaverse will
evolve how users interact with brands, intellectual properties, health
services, cultural heritage, and each other things on the Internet. A user
could join friends to play a multiplayer game, watch a movie via a
streaming service and then attend a university course precisely the same as
in the real world.
The metaverse development will require new software architecture that will
enable decentralized and collaborative virtual worlds. These self-organized
virtual worlds will be permanent and will require maintenance operations.
In addition, it will be necessary to design an efficient data management
system and prevent privacy violations. Finally, the convergence of physical
reality, virtually enhanced, and an always-on virtual space highlighted the
need to rethink the actual paradigms for visualization, interaction, and
sharing of digital information, moving toward more natural, intuitive,
dynamically customizable, multimodal, and multi-user solutions.
This special session aims to focus on exploring how the realization of the
metaverse can transform certain application domains such us: (i)
healthcare, in which the metaverse solutions can, for instance, improve the
communication between patients and physicians; (ii) cultural heritage, with
potentially more effective solutions for tourism guidance, site
maintenance, and heritage object conservation; and (iii) industry, where to
enable data-driven decision making, smart maintenance, and overall asset
optimisation.

SUBMISSION AND DECISIONS

Authors should prepare an Abstract (1 - 2 pages) that clearly indicates the
originality of the contribution and the relevance of the work. The Abstract
should include the title of the paper, names and affiliations of the
authors, an abstract, keywords, an introduction describing the nature of
the problem, a description of the contribution, the results achieved and
their applicability.
As an alternative to the traditional abstract, it is possible to submit a
Graphical Abstract. For further information, please see here:

When the first review process has been completed, authors receive a
notification of either acceptance or rejection of the submission. If the
abstract has been accepted, the authors can prepare a full paper.
The format for the full paper is identical to the format for the abstract

Full Papers will be reviewed by the Technical Program Committee. Authors of
accepted full papers must submit the final paper version according to the
deadline, register for the workshop, and attend to present their papers.
The maximum length for final papers is 6 pages.

quality, originality and relevance. Accepted papers will be submitted for

Adaptive and personalized systems have become pervasive technologies,
gradually playing an increasingly important role in our daily lives.
Indeed, we are now accustomed to interacting with algorithms that leverage
the power of Language Models (LLMs) to assist us in various scenarios. From
services suggesting music or movies to personal assistants proactively
supporting us in complex decision-making tasks. As these technologies
continue to shape our everyday experiences,
it becomes imperative to ensure that the internal mechanisms guiding these
algorithms are transparent and comprehensible. The EU General Data
Protection Regulation (GDPR) recognizes the users' right to explanation
when confronted with intelligent systems, highlighting the significance of
this aspect.
Regrettably, current research often prioritizes the maximization of
personalization strategy effectiveness, such as recommendation accuracy, at
the expense of model explainability.
To address this concern, the workshop aims to provide a platform for
in-depth discussions on challenges, problems, and innovative research
approaches in the field. The workshop will specifically focus on
investigating the role of transparency and explainability in recent
methodologies for constructing user models and developing personalized and
adaptive systems.
By bringing together researchers and practitioners, the workshop aims to
foster collaboration, knowledge exchange, and the development of novel
solutions. Through this collective effort, we can advance the understanding
and implementation of transparent and interpretable approaches in adaptive
and personalized systems, including integrating Language Models (LLMs) to
enhance transparency and enable users to comprehend the internal mechanisms
guiding these systems.

We encourage the submission of contributions investigating novel
methodologies to exploit heterogeneous personal data and approaches to
build transparent and scrutable user models. In particular, we accept three
kinds of submissions:
(A) Regular papers (max. 14 pages + references - single-column ACM format)
(B) Ongoing projects, Demo and Short papers (max. 7 pages + references -

All submitted papers will be evaluated by at least two members of the
program committee, based on originality, significance, relevance, and

All accepted papers will be published by ACM as a joint volume of Extended

*Admission Criteria*
To participate in the call, a master degree in Computer Science (LM-18 ),

*About the Laboratory*
The MUDILAB at UNIMIB mainly focuses on the development and evaluation of
decision support systems and eXplainable AI - human interaction protocols.
Currently, the lab has two faculty members, three funded PhD students and
two post-doc.
The founders, the head Prof. Federico Cabitza and Prof. Davide Ciucci, have
both been counted among the world's top 2% of researchers in AI and medical
informatics for years, according to the list curated by Stanford
researchers.
The MUDI group has a recent track record of previous publications in
prestigious venues (CHI, Interact, AAAI, ECAI, …) and research projects on
both fundamental and application-oriented research, in collaborations with
several hospitals and academic partners.
The BMI lab at UNIPV has a long tradition (dating back to the mid 80s, with
its founder Prof. Mario Stefanelli) of research in biomedical informatics
and AI in medicine. Led by prof. Silvana Quaglini, the lab is the biggest
in Italy in its field and counts 7 faculty, 2 post-docs, and 5 PhD students
(enrolled either in the Biomedical Informatics PhD @UNIPV or in the
National PhD in AI - health&life sciences pillar).
Both groups aim to provide its members a friendly environment with strong
supervision, in which individuals can grow and let their full potential
flourish. We regularly organize group meetings and gatherings outside the
lab to keep the team motivated and encourage a good work culture.

We will consider two different types of submissions:
- Regular papers will be up to 10 pages (excluding references) and will report original research on how cybersecurity and education can support Academia and Industry to reduce the gap between demand (workplace, recruitment) and supply (qualification, training);
- Extended Abstracts will be up to 4 pages (excluding references) and will report novel ideas about the application of the role of cybersecurity education in Academia and Industry.

CAiSE 2024 features a Research Project Exhibition (RPE@CAiSE'24) where researchers and
practitioners can present their ongoing research projects (e.g., Horizon or ERC projects,
national grants) in the context of Information Systems Engineering. The main objective of this
call is to serve as a forum where presenters can disseminate the intermediate results of their
projects or get feedback about research project proposals being developed. The exhibition
will also provide a warm environment to find potential research partners, foster existing
relationships, and discuss research ideas.
To participate in the RPE@CAiSE'24, the authors should submit a short paper (5-8 pages)
showcasing the project, including the participants, the main objectives of the project and
relevant results obtained so far (or expected results in the case of project proposals). Each
submission will be peer-reviewed on the relevance of the submitted paper in the context of
CAiSE 2024. If the paper is accepted, the authors will be invited to register for the conference
to present their work at the Research Projects Exhibition session at CAiSE 2024.
The accepted contributions will be proposed for publication by CEUR proceedings using the
1-column CEUR-ART style. In addition, the authors of the most influential project presented
at the RPE@CAiSE'24 will receive an award distinguishing their contribution as the "Most
Influential Project of the Research Project Exhibition @CAiSE'24".
RESEARCH PROJECTS REQUIREMENTS
For the Research Projects Exhibition, we solicit submissions of projects related to the topics
of CAiSE that meet the following criteria:
• Projects funded by the European Union, by national or local funding organisations, or even
by individual universities and industries.
• Projects focused on fundamental research, applied research or more industry-oriented.
• Research projects carried out by an international consortium of partners or by a national
research team.
• Research statements for future projects concerning the Information Systems Engineering
community.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Papers should be submitted via Easychair
(https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=caise2024) by selecting the "Research
Projects Exhibition". Each submission of a research project should include:
• The project's full name, acronym, duration (from-to), participants, funding agency and URL.
• Names of presenter(s) and main contributors.
• Abstract and keywords.
• Summary of project objectives and expected tangible outputs.
• The relevance of the project (or one of its work packages) to the topics of the International
Conference on Advanced Information Systems Engineering.
• If the project is ongoing: summary of current status and intermediate results.
All submissions should be 5 to 8 pages long and be formatted as a 1-column CEUR-ART style
(templates available at https://ceur-ws.org/Vol-XXX/). An intention to submit should be
performed one week before the deadline, including the full name of the project, the authors'
name and the abstract.
Each submission will be reviewed by at least two members of the Program Committee. In case
of disagreement, a third member of the Program Committee will review the submission. The
Program Committee will comprise international researchers with expertise in the field.
ATTENDANCE AND PRESENTATION
During the Research Projects Exhibition session, the authors of accepted contributions will
present the research project. Details about the format of the session and instructions to
prepare the presentation will be given to authors after the acceptance notification. At least
one author of each submission accepted for the Research Projects Exhibition must register
and attend the conference to present the work. The author needs a full registration to present
the research project.

CAiSE 2024 is organising journal-first sessions as part of the scientific program. The aim of
these sessions is to disseminate recent important research contributions and spark
discussions between authors and researchers in the CAiSE community. Authors of selected
journal articles on CAiSE-related topics will be invited to present their work at the
conference.
SCOPE
For the journal-first sessions, we solicit submissions related to articles that have been
accepted for publication by a reputable journal and that meet the following criteria:
• The article relates to the topics of the CAiSE conference and the recent call for papers.
• The article is an original submission to the journal and not an extension of an earlier
conference or workshop paper.
• The article is an original research article; review articles or commentaries will not be
considered.
• The article was accepted for publication by a journal on or after 1 January 2023, the
acceptance must have been publicly announced, the article must be available at the
publisher’s website (e.g., as "articles in advance" or published on a journal’s website), and
the article must be written in English.
• The article has not been presented at, and is not under consideration for, journal-first
tracks of other conferences.
FORMAT
Accepted submissions will be presented as part of the CAiSE 2024 scientific programme.
SUBMISION
Submissions must be done electronically via Easychair
(https://easychair.org/my/conference?conf=caise2024) and include:
• Title and author information of the article.
• The original abstract and keywords.
• DOI of the original publication or, alternatively, a link to the publication at the journal’s
website.
EVALUATION
All submissions will be reviewed by the track chairs with the aim to accept all qualifying
submissions subject to ability to accommodate them in the program. If needed, priority will
be given to submissions according to their topical fit with the scope of the conference, the
importance of the contribution, as well as the standing of the respective journal (including,
but not limited to, the journal's impact factor and ranking results).
ATTENDANCE AND PRESENTATION
At least one author of each submission accepted for the journal-first track must register
and attend the conference to present the work. The author needs a full registration to
present the journal article. As the articles of the journal-first track have been published
already, they will not be part of the CAiSE 2024 proceedings. The articles will be listed in
the conference program and CAiSE 2024 participants will have access to the respective
abstracts and a pointer to the original journal article.

Overview
------------
Recent developments in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and meta-design
challenge the understanding of the concept of “end user”.
The 8th edition of this workshop aims to critically differentiate,
dissect, and deepen the roles, experiences, and demands of end users by
inviting contributions from different perspectives.
The workshop invites contributions to explore the following fundamental
issues:
- Re-conceptualizing the multi-faceted roles that end users can play.
- Investigating how end users are evolving into active participants in
the design and development through frameworks (such as meta-design) that
encourage creation, modification, and evolution in individual and group
activities.
- Understanding the skills and literacies (e.g., computational fluency)
that end users need to acquire to be successful contributors (e.g.,
education, after-school clubs, etc.).
- Envisioning future scenarios and possibilities for end user roles and
experiences in the context of emerging technologies and cultural changes.
- Understanding the design trade-offs associated with balancing the
potential value of end-user contributions with the necessary effort to
ensure that end users will be motivated to contribute over long periods
of time.
Participants from academia, industry, and user communities are invited
to share their ideas, insights, and experiences to increase our
collective understanding and approach towards end users in the digital age.
Topics of discussion may include (but will not be limited to):
- Analysis of the use and historical development of the concept of “end
user”
- Can meta-design frameworks facilitate and empower end users in
becoming designers, shaping and adapting systems to their needs?
- What are the major responsibilities for end users in "end-user
development” and/versus "end-user software engineering"?
- If computational fluency is widely achieved by humans in the digital
age — how will this change the concept of "end user" and “learning with
digital tools”?
- How can the division between professional developers and end users be
designed and supported as collaborative interactions rather than a rigid
separation?
- How do we scale up user participation from individuals to groups to
communities?
- In which contexts are end users the drivers of the innovation?
- Which other frameworks and environments in AI exist in addition to
Large Language Models (LLMs) for supporting end users?
- How does the role of end users change in the era of LLMs?
- Which additional learning demands occur that empower end users to
assess LLM possibilities and limits?
- Success stories and failures (e.g., empirical studies) involving or
analyzing end users as active participants in sociotechnical systems in
different domains (education, workplace, at home, leisure, etc.).

SCOPE & MOTIVATION:
ACAIN 2024: AI meets Computational Neuroscience and Cognitive Science
The ACAIN 2024 symposium and course is an interdisciplinary event featuring
leading scientists from AI and Neuroscience, providing a special
opportunity to learn about cutting-edge research in the fields of AI,
Neuroscience, Neuroscience-Inspired AI, Human-Level AI, and Cognitive
Science.
The 4th Advanced Course and Symposium on Artificial Intelligence &
Neuroscience (ACAIN) is a full-immersion four-day Course and Symposium in
Tuscany on cutting-edge advances in Artificial Intelligence and
Neuroscience with lectures delivered by world-renowned experts. The Course
provides a stimulating environment for academics, early career researchers,
Post-Docs, PhD students and industry leaders. Participants will also have
the chance to present their results with oral talks or posters, and to
interact with their colleagues, in a convivial and productive environment.
Two days of keynote talks and oral presentations, the ACAIN Symposium,
(September 24-25), will be preceded by lectures of leading scientists, the
ACAIN Course, (September 22-23).
Bringing together AI and neuroscience promises to yield benefits for both
fields. The future impact and progress in both AI and Neuroscience will
strongly depend on continuous synergy, exchange, collaboration and
efficient cooperation between the two research communities. These are the
goals of the International Course and Symposium - ACAIN 2024, which is
aimed both at AI experts with interests in Neuroscience and at
neuroscientists with an interest in AI. ACAIN 2024 accepts rigorous
research that promotes and fosters multidisciplinary interactions between
artificial intelligence and neuroscience.
The Advanced Course is suited for scholars, academics, early career
researchers, Post-Docs, PhD students and industry leaders.
The Event (Course and Symposium) will involve a total of 36-40 hours of

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
Recently, researchers have been examining the unforeseen issues caused by the excessive use of personal devices and online services, especially as companies increasingly employ "attention-capture" tactics like guilty-pleasure recommendations and automatic content playback. These strategies exploit users' psychological vulnerabilities, aiming to boost advertising revenue, resulting in tangible repercussions on users' perceived agency and often leading to a perceived lack of control over their technology use. These problems gave rise to a new kind of psychological "digital wellbeing," investigated in fields such as Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and psychology. Traditional strategies employed by practitioners and researchers involve the creation of Digital Self-Control Tools (DSCTs), i.e., mobile applications and browser extensions that empower users to monitor their usage patterns and implement interventions, such as timers and lock-out mechanisms, to self-regulate device usage. Yet, researchers and the users themselves are starting to warn that achieving digital wellbeing is a path of personal growth that requires education more than self-monitoring strategies.
The objective of this workshop is to establish a venue for the academic and industrial communities to discuss ongoing research and ideas at the intersection of digital wellbeing and education, aiming to promote the development of strategies and tools to "teach" users – particularly children and teenagers – to use technology more meaningfully and consciously. This objective can be achieved in multiple ways, such as by creating novel DSCTs that include educational aspects, serious games, or collaborative platforms to introduce and support digital wellbeing learning at school.
This workshop is part of the International Conference on Advanced Visual Interfaces (AVI 2024).
CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
We invite researchers and practitioners in interdisciplinary domains intersecting HCI, AI, psychology, design, and/or education to engage in dialog on the topics above. A key priority of our workshop will be to invite submissions from an intellectually diverse and global group of participants to further discussions on how appropriate human-centered design can contribute to digital wellbeing education. Prospective workshop participants are invited to submit a position paper (2-4 pages) describing and highlighting their contributions to the workshop topics.
The topics of interest for the workshop include, but are not limited to:
- participatory and co-design of digital wellbeing systems;
- tools and strategies to teach digital wellbeing at school;
- strategies and tools for measuring students’ digital wellbeing;
- novel DSCTs that include educational aspects;
- gamification strategies for digital wellbeing;
- ethical, social, and political factors.
WORKSHOP STRUCTURE
This half-day workshop will be interactive and informal. It will combine presentations of accepted position papers with discussions and hands-on sessions, aimed at generating ideas for future research directions. The workshop is planned to be in-person, at the conference. Virtual participation will be made possible. AVI workshops are scheduled for either the 3rd or 4th of June, 2024. Submissions of position papers should be of 2-4 pages, in the ACM Primary Article Submission Templates (single column, https://www.acm.org/publications/proceedings-template).

They will be reviewed by all organizers based on relevance, originality, and overall quality. Upon acceptance, at least one author of each accepted paper will be required to attend the workshop. AIMS AND SCOPE
The "Robots for Humans" (R4H) workshop bridges the Human-Computer
Interaction (HCI) and Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) communities.
With this workshop, we want to bring together these communities by
highlighting the commonalities of the two, stressing their differences,
and encouraging the contamination of their methods and results. We aim
to do so by recognising that human beings can be the bridge between
these two communities and the main objective for a human-centred design
approach.
With these reflections in mind, our workshop invites HCI and HRI
researchers to develop proposals for theoretical, technical and design
ideas that highlight thoughts on empowerment and the new challenges
posed by the design of robots. We ask researchers to propose both
perspectives: the utopian, which imagines ideal scenarios, and the
dystopian, which explores potential challenges, reflecting on the role
of artefact design and interaction in shaping these visions.
Join us to explore the intricate bond between humans and robots for
thoughtful HRI advancements.

Research methods and challenges for different contexts (e.g., assistive
and education) in the HRI field.
Interaction with virtual or physical embodied agents, human factors and
human-in-the-loop in HRI, group dynamics in HRI.
Design relationship between humans and robots (multi-modal
communication, robot personalities, gender robotics, empathy).
Diversity, power dynamics, gender, racism, social stereotypes and
vulnerable targets of users in HRI.
Trust, acceptance and explainability in HRI; personalisation and
end-user development of robot applications.
Ethical issues (e.g. privacy, misuse and abusive interactions), social
risks and fairness in HRI.

ORGANISATION AND DURATION
We plan to conduct a half-day workshop including the following activities:

Led by moderators, subgroups will facilitate idea exchange in designing
HRI applications.
Participants will then identify the most significant topics for the
workshop at the session's conclusion.

All submissions will be subjected to a thorough peer-review process,
focusing on originality, quality, soundness, and relevance.
The workshop will use a double-blind review process, with three members
of the program committee reviewing each submitted paper.
Upon acceptance, at least one author of each accepted paper will be
required to attend the workshop.
Selected accepted papers will be considered for publication in a
Special Issue of a relevant human-robot interaction journal.
