(Apologies for any cross-posting) A full-time doctoral research position is open in co-supervision in the IIHM group (http://iihm.imag.fr) of LIG lab (https://www.liglab.fr), in Grenoble (France) and in the ESTIA-Recherche team (https://www.estia.fr/recherche), in Bidart (France). The fellowship is co-funded by Carnot LSI (https://carnot-lsi.com/) and ARTS (https://www.ic-arts.eu/) institutes for 36 months. Gross salary is approximately between 20K€ et 23K€ brut per year. The doctoral research will be co-advised by Céline Coutrix (http://iihm.imag.fr/coutrix/) and William Delamare (https://profils.estia.fr/w.delamare/) * Scientific Context The student is expected to integrate both the IIHM and the ESTIA-Recherche research groups (around 18 months each). The IIHM group is concerned with the design, implementation, and evaluation of interaction techniques that are effective, usable, and enjoyable. The group is present in the main Human-Computer Interaction conferences: CHI, UIST, AVI, Interact, EICS, etc. It has long-lasting connections to other research groups in France and abroad, and is well connected to the industry. IIHM is part of the LIG lab, which is equipped with the latest machines for physical fabrication of prototypes. ESTIA-Recherche mobilizes multiple disciplines to address the concept of intelligent and empowering interfaces for the engineering of complex systems. The multidisciplinary team focuses on scientific, technological, and societal themes to respond to cross-functional projects. ESTIA-Recherche hence studies and designs Human-Human, Human-System, and System-System interactions to contribute to energy and digital transitions and to the evolution towards the industry of the future. * Research Plan The PhD’s objective is to imagine novel ways to interact with augmented objects that best leverages users’ expertise with the existing objects in their environment. The Internet of Things (IoT) started to replace our traditional objects, both personal (e.g., smart home) and professional (e.g., smart office), with connected objects including augmented capabilities. Users are already able to use voice or direct touch to interact with these objects. Yet, users already developed extensive expertise with their traditional objects’ current physical interfaces. The PhD student will explore how users’ expertise can transfer from the UI of traditional objects to novel remote UIs (deformable tangible interaction, or mid-air inputs for instance). * Candidate We seek candidates with profound interest in Human-Computer Interaction, strong motivation, and creativity. A successful candidate: - Has a strong master’s degree in computer science or another area related to Human-Computer Interaction, - Has excellent written and oral communication skills, - Has excellent software and/or hardware skills. Call for papers for the Second Submission round for EICS 2023 : The 15th ACM SIGCHI Symposium on Engineering Interactive Computing Systems June, 2023 - Swansea, UK https://eics.acm.org/2023/ Submission deadline for the Second round of PACM EICS 2023: October 24, 2022 EICS 2023 is the fifteenth international ACM SIGCHI conference devoted to engineering interactive computing systems and their user interfaces, addressing one or more software quality factors, such as usability, user experience, reliability, security, etc. Work presented at EICS covers all stages of the engineering life-cycle of interactive systems - inception, requirements, design, specification, coding, data analytics, validation and verification, deployment and maintenance. EICS has the longest tradition of bringing together researchers who contribute to better ways of creating interactive computing systems, stemming from the conference on command languages in the seventies. The conference is best known for rigorously contributing and disseminating research results that hold the midst in between user interface design, software engineering and computational interaction. There are three submission deadlines per year, and authors can choose when to submit. Papers follow the traditional journal model of reviewing: papers may be accepted after submission and review, or may be recommended for revisions and re-submission to the next round to enable authors to refine papers based on reviewer recommendations. Submissions for the journal of this venue should present original and mature research work within the scope of the conference. New from this year: accepted journal papers can be either regular research papers, or technical notes. Technical Notes are shorter, more focused contributions, that focus specifically on system contributions and technical work. Elucidating technical details of complex interactive systems, preferably ensuring the work can be reproduced or put to practice, is a primary objective of a Technical Note. Tech Notes require an illustrative example of the system, and they can, but do not need to, be validated by formal user evaluations or user studies. Validation can also be done through e.g. simulation, feasibility, or comparisons.Tech Notes will be judged on their technical merits and relevance to interactive systems concerns. Research and technical papers are expected to present significant and original contributions validated with the targeted end-users. Submissions should clearly state the progress beyond the existing state-of- the-art and the expected societal benefits of the developed technology. When possible, validate scenarios with the target user groups and well-identified technology readiness levels (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technology_readiness_level) should be at least outlined. Submissions We invite Research and Technical papers, up to 15 pages, describing original unpublished research, making a substantial contribution to the research field. All submissions will be reviewed by the Program Committee. *DPID 2022*: The 1st ASSETS International Workshop on “Designing with and for People with Intellectual Disabilities” An online event with asynchronous and synchronous activities on October 19th, 2022, from 9am to 1pm Athens time www.luxia.inf.usi.ch/dpid/ luxia(a)usi.ch --------------- *Call for Participation* --------------- This half-day workshop aims to focus on community building, enabling researchers to share experiences on designing for and with people with Intellectual Disabilities, providing internal support, and establishing new collaborations. Our pre-workshop plans propose asynchronous activities to support networking and to understand participants’ preferences and needs. Workshop outcomes will help fill a gap in the available guidelines on including people with intellectual disabilities in research, which should lead to more accessible protocols and personalised and better fit-for-purpose technologies. Deadline Extended: Workshop on Designing Accessible Systems for Users with Multiple Impairments

*Based on popular demand, we have extended the submission deadline to Friday 30th September* We invite researchers and assistive technologists to share their perspectives related to challenges in designing accessible systems and assistive technologies that consider the multidimensional and often complex needs of users with multiple impairments. Workshop date: 23rd October 2022 (via Zoom) Historically, the accessibility community has focused on designing assistive technologies and systems related to single categories of impairments. While this approach is justifiable and contributes to the advancement of the field, many researchers argue that designing technologies for one impairment at a time contributes to an oversimplification of disability and does not reflect the real-world experiences of a significant number of users who live with multiple impairments. How can the accessibility field leverage theories and concepts from other disciplines (e.g. disability studies, medical humanities, social work, engineering, education) to support more appropriate and inclusive technologies for users with complex needs? How can future assistive technologies consider diverse sensory, cognitive, and physical characteristics? High-quality original submissions that address such future issues, show the design and evaluation in (near-) real scenarios, explain how to benchmark systems, and outline the education and training procedures for acquiring new perceptual skills while using such systems are welcome. Research and technical papers are expected to present significant and original contributions validated with the targeted end-users. Submissions should clearly state the progress beyond the existing state-of- the-art and the expected societal benefits of the developed technology. Submissions We invite Research and Technical papers, up to 15 pages, describing original unpublished research, making a substantial contribution to the research field. This PhD will be co-financed by BMW Group which also means that you can stay at the company for at least 6 months. The goal of this thesis is the design and development of an experiential (cognitive) car seat acting as an input sensitive, fully interactive device which interfaces the driver with digital content. Equipped with pressure-sensitive textile patches, the seat with will recognize full-body interactions allowing the driver to interact with the car. Our university has a strong international outlook, as testified by its multilingual courses (English, Italian, German) and a high number of students and teaching staff from abroad. The prospective PhD student will work together with a team in the field of next-generation interfaces. To apply for participation in the doctoral school, we ask you to submit a 2 to 3 pages long paper using the ACM interim template. The paper should describe the context and motivation of your PhD research, the problem and aims that drive your research and your research objectives and/or questions. It should further describe and explain your (proposed) research approach and methods, a tentative timeline, and include a discussion of any results you may already have. Please also include the context of your PhD, i.e. the university programme in which you conduct your PhD, the status of your PhD, the expected completion date, and any other relevant information on your PhD situation. Submissions will not be peer-reviewed. The process will be headed by a panel of 5 experts including the DC chairs, who will be present (in person wherever possible) at the MUM 2022 conference DC discussion to advise students and guide the discussion following the students presentations of their work (more details on how the event will be organise will follow in the next weeks). We will select participants to the DC prioritising those who would likely benefit most, i.e. students who have a clear plan as a foundation for discussion, but are not already too advanced in their PhD, to still be able to benefit from advice in developing their dissertation (e.g. Students that are in the pre Doctoral Proposal defence - so that the discussion at the DC might help them refine if not shape it). Submissions must be submitted via EasyChair. Accepted students will be asked to prepare a presentation of their PhD research (the length of the presentation will vary depending on submission and acceptance rates). Besides the submitted document and presentation, students will be asked to prepare a poster which will be included in the MUM 2022 poster track to give students the opportunity to showcase and discuss their work beyond the DC session. Moreover, the contributions will be made available on the conference webpage to make them accessible to the public (but not included in the proceedings). Interaction 23 is a premier venue for interaction design practitioners, researchers, and educators to discuss emergent practice-based challenges, share best practices in the discipline, and call for a change through design.
