ACM UMAP 2024 is pleased to invite proposals for workshops to be held in conjunction with the conference. The workshops will provide a venue to discuss and explore key emerging areas of user modeling, recommender systems and adaptive hypermedia research, among others, with a group of like-minded researchers and practitioners from industry and academia. In this edition, our goal is to have a balanced workshop program, comprising different workshop formats and combining newly emerging, currently evolving, and established research topics. Workshops are encouraged to be as dynamic and interactive as possible. Note that organizers are expected to attend the workshop and be actively involved in its organization. * Abstract (up to 300 words) and topics of interest. * Keywords (at least 3). * Motivation on why the workshop is of particular interest at this time and how it complements (rather than duplicates) the topics of the main conference. * Workshop format, particularly discussing the mix of expected events, such as paper presentations, invited talks, panels, and general discussions. * Short description of the intended audience and the expected number of participants, including how they will be selected. * List of (potential) members of the program committee (at least 50% have to be confirmed at the time of the proposal). The program committee is mandatory. * Requested duration (half day or full day). * When available, past editions of the workshop, including their website URLs, a brief statement on the development of the workshop series, e.g., in terms of topics, number of paper submissions and participants, post-workshop publications over the years and acceptance statistics. * If this would be the first edition of the workshop, a description of how this workshop differs from others on the same or similar topics (include conference name and year). * Any other relevant information to support your proposal. ** Instructions ** *Support*: We encourage both researchers and industry practitioners to submit workshop proposals. Researchers interested in submitting a workshop proposal are invited to contact us in advance, so we can help to design successful proposals. In particular, for workshop proposals with novel interactive formats, we are happy to assist in further developing and implementing the ideas. *Diversity*: We strongly suggest involving organizers from different institutions, bringing their different perspectives to the workshop topic. We welcome workshops with a creative structure that may attract various types of participants and may ensure rich interactions. *Expectations*: The organizers of accepted workshops are expected to set up a webpage for the workshop including detailed information about the workshop organization and timeline, disseminate a call for papers, a call for participation, select reviewers, and gather reviews before selecting the final program. They will be responsible for their own publicity and reviewing processes. *Proceedings*: There will be conference adjunct proceedings published by ACM, and available via the ACM Digital Library. A camera-ready summary of the workshop should be written by the organizers to be included in these adjunct proceedings. Moreover, all workshop papers will be published in the same proceedings. Hence, the workshop organizers will need to make sure that the authors of workshop papers adhere to the adjunct proceedings publication timeline. *Camera-ready Information*: Accepted summaries/papers will require a further revision in order to meet the requirements and the page limits of the camera-ready format required by ACM. Instructions for the preparation of the camera-ready versions of the summaries/papers will be provided after acceptance. We strongly recommend the usage of LaTeX/Overleaf for the camera-ready papers to minimize the extent of reformatting. Users of the Word template must use either the version for Microsoft Word for Windows, Macintosh Office 2011, or Macintosh Office 2016 (other formats such as Open Office, etc., are not admitted) for the camera-ready submission to avoid incompatibility issues. ** Registration and Presentation Policy ** Each accepted workshop summary must be accompanied by a distinct full author registration, completed by the early registration date cut-off. Each workshop has to be run by all organizers. Therefore, each workshop organizer must be registered (at least 25% in person, the remaining online). Each accepted workshop summary will be included in the conference adjunct proceedings. The official publication date is when the proceedings are made available in the ACM Digital Library. This date may be up to two weeks before the first day of UMAP 2024. The official publication date affects the deadline for any patent filings related to published work. CFP: Workshop on Information Retrieval for Understudied Users - IR4U2@ECIR 2023

**** PLEASE, EXCUSE MULTIPLE POSTINGS **** *CFP for the 1st Workshop on Information Retrieval for Understudied Users (IR4U2)* Please join us at IR4U2, co-located with the 46th European Conference on Information Retrieval (ECIR), which will take place 24th-28th March 2024 in Glasgow, Scotland Information Retrieval (IR) remains an active, fast-paced area of research. Nevertheless, most advancements in this domain have primarily favored what we might term 'conventional' users, such as English-speaking adults. We envision IR4U2 as a forum to spotlight efforts that, while sparse, consider diverse, and often understudied, user groups when designing, developing, assessing, and deploying the IR technologies that directly impact them. Among these groups, we find, for example, older adults, young children and adolescents, individuals afflicted by mental health disorders, users with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), individuals with intellectual disabilities, or those with specific learning needs. We aim to 1. Raise awareness about ongoing efforts focused on IR technologies designed for and used by often understudied user groups; 2. Identify challenges and open issues impacting this area of research; 3. Ignite discussions to identify common frameworks for future research; 4. Outline a general approach to facilitate research endeavors driven by and at the service of specific user groups. 5. Cross-fertilization and community-building by sharing lessons learned gathered from research catering to different audiences by researchers and (industry) practitioners across various disciplines. IR4U2 will be a highly participatory, full-day, in-person workshop. This will involve informal interactions, facilitated group work, and brief presentations of accepted contributions. These contributions will help construct a snapshot of the current works in this area. Topics of interest include: - User modeling to enable IR and recommendation technologies tailored to understudied populations. - Data collection and benchmark development of IR catering to understudied populations. - IR applications targeting understudied populations. - UI/UX for search, recommender, and question-answering systems for understudied populations. - IR-related technology (clustering, classification, text processing, text complexity) and their impact on understudied populations. - Different perspectives of evaluation. - Design of the user interaction with IR systems. - Ethical issues associated with IR technologies for understudied users; e.g., their right to be represented, acknowledged, have access, and be served by existing and to-be-developed systems. This is not an exhaustive list, as we are also interested in contributions discussing challenges inherent to designing IR technology at the service of understudied user groups–from the need for multidisciplinary, multi-stakeholder collaborations to how to build datasets. Submissions: Peer-reviewed contributions. These include research papers presenting empirical explorations, user studies, and/or new algorithms related to the open problems listed in topics of interest, as well as position/vision contributions discussing uses cases, challenges, and future research directions. These contributions should be submitted on EasyChair ( https://easychair.org/my/conference?conf=ir4u2) at least 4 pages, but up to 12 (excluding references) formatted in CEURART’s single-column template. Accepted contributions will be presented at the workshop and published in workshop proceedings. Editorially-reviewed contributions. We invite students who feel they would benefit from this kind of feedback—the ideal participant is a doctoral student about two years from finishing their Ph.D. We will also consider advanced Master's students and junior Ph.D. students provided their research plan is sufficiently developed to benefit from the discussion at the DC. Submissions will be selected by the DC chairs and potentially other reviewers. The strongest candidates will be those who have a clear topic and research approach and who have made some progress, but are not too far along in their research so that they can still reshape their research topic or approach. The final version of accepted Doctoral Consortium submissions will be included in the main conference proceedings published in the ACM Digital Library. The Doctoral Consortium workshop will take place as a separate session in parallel to workshops and tutorials, and DC participants will have the opportunity to present their research in the poster session during the main program. Complimentary/reduced conference registration will be available for students. Ideal IUI submissions should address practical HCI challenges using machine intelligence and discuss both computational and human-centric aspects of such methodologies, techniques, and systems. Ensuring data privacy, addressing bias in algorithms, and maintaining transparency are vital aspects that need to be carefully managed and regulated to foster trust and accountability. In addition to offering an exciting scientific program, CAiSE’24 will feature a best paper award, a journal special issue, and a PhD-thesis award: • Best Paper Award‚ prize EUR 1000 (sponsored by Springer) • A small selection of best papers will be invited to submit enhanced versions for consideration in a special issue of Elsevier Information Systems journal dedicated to this conference. • PhD-Thesis Award • Best PhD thesis of a past CAiSE Doctoral Consortium author (co-sponsored by the CAiSE Steering Committee and Springer) Papers should be submitted in PDF format. Submissions must conform to Springer‚ LNCS format and should not exceed 15 pages, including all text, figures, references, and appendices. Submissions not conforming to the LNCS format, exceeding 15 pages, or being obviously out of the scope of the conference, will be rejected without review. Three to five keywords characterizing the paper should be listed at the end of the abstract. Each paper will be reviewed by at least two program committee members and, if positively evaluated, by one additional program board member. The selected papers will be discussed among the paper reviewers online and during the program board meeting. As the review process is not blind, please indicate your name and affiliation on your submission. Accepted papers will be presented at CAiSE’24 and published in the Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) conference proceedings. We invite three types of original and scientific papers. The type of submission must be indicated in the submission system. Each contribution should explicitly address the engineering or the operation of information systems, clearly identify the information systems problem addressed, the expected impact of the contribution to information system engineering or operation, and the research method used. We strongly advise authors to clearly emphasize these aspects in their paper, including the abstract. Technical papers describe original solutions (theoretical, methodological or conceptual) in the field of IS Engineering. A technical paper should clearly describe the situation or problem tackled, the relevant state of the art, the position or solution suggested and its potential‚ as well as demonstrate the benefits of the contribution through a rigorous evaluation. Empirical papers evaluate existing problem situations including problems encountered in practice, or validate proposed solutions with scientific means, i.e., by empirical studies, experiments, case studies, experience reports, simulations, etc. Scientific reflection on problems and practices in industry also falls into this category. The topic of the evaluation presented in the paper as well as its causal or logical properties must be clearly stated. The research method must be sound and appropriate. Exploratory papers describe completely new research positions or approaches, in order to face a generic situation arising because of new ICT tools, new kinds of activities, or new IS challenges. They must precisely describe the situation and demonstrate why current methods, tools, ways of reasoning, or meta-models are inadequate. They must also rigorously present their approach and demonstrate its pertinence and correctness in addressing the identified situation. In both trends, human control over technology is jeopardized. At the same time, little is happening in terms of innovating how we think and build automations. This is despite the current availability of various types of devices and modalities for supporting user interactions. This talk will discuss concepts and methods that can be useful to address the core challenges of human control over automations involving people, objects, devices, services, and robots. The goal is to identify innovative approaches to support end users, even without programming experience, to understand, create or modify the automations in their daily environments, augmenting human capabilities in managing automations through effective modalities, relevant analytics, explanations, and intelligent recommendations. Short bio: Fabio Paternò is Research Director at the Italian National Research Council, where he leads the Laboratory on Human Interfaces in Information Systems at the Information Science and Technologies Institute, in Pisa. He has been a principal investigator in several international and national projects, mainly in the area of Human-Computer Interaction. His current research interests are Interactive Smart Spaces, Accessibility, End-User Development, Human-centered Artificial Intelligence, and Humanoid Robots.
