At the core, the adjective “smart” comprises terms like intelligent, purpose oriented, supportive, artful, clever and the like. Thus, smart does not necessarily include the usage of technology (neither does it exclude technology!). After the shock of the pandemic, learning ecosystems – and in particular schools, universities, and territorial learning communities – all over the world – are facing a new phase characterized by the search for and the experimentation of ways to their “new normality“. In such a context, collaboration is emerging as an approach and an attitude of considerable relevance that stays also at the basis of the polyphonic construction of the future of learning ecosystems. Alongside collaboration, on the technological side, it continues to rise the relevance of intelligent systems, generically collected under the label of Artificial Intelligence (AI); concurrently, on the pedagogical side, competences have become the goal of future education, also in the attempt to close the skill gap, which represents one of the greatest dangers for the transition towards smarter productive systems and societies. Competences and AI, by the way, are also topics that intersect and influence each other and rise questions of ethical nature. So, what should we expect for future learning ecosystems? How “smart learning ecosystems” are changing? How such changes may be related to the achievement of “a better learning for a better world” as a contribution to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)? How will they contribute to the reduction of inequalities and, at the same time, to the empowering of each individual according to his expectations and talents? This special issue, which is supported by the Association for Smart Learning Ecosystems and Regional Development (ASLERD), welcomes papers that report on work aimed to contribute to the discussion about these issues. High-quality original submissions that address such future issues, show the design and evaluation in (near-) real scenarios, explain how to benchmark systems, and outline the education and training procedures for acquiring new perceptual skills while using such systems are welcome. Research and technical papers are expected to present significant and original contributions validated with the targeted end-users. Submissions should clearly state the progress beyond the existing state-of- the-art and the expected societal benefits of the developed technology. When possible, validate scenarios with the target user groups and well-identified technology readiness levels (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technology_readiness_level) should be at least outlined. Submissions We invite Research and Technical papers, up to 15 pages, describing original unpublished research, making a substantial contribution to the research field. All submissions will be reviewed by the Program Committee. As was the case for IHAW 2021, the proceedings of IHAW 2022 will be published by Springer in the Communications in Computer and Information Science (CCIS) series (https://www.springer.com/series/7899) and will be presented in the technical sessions of the conference. The Best Paper Award is sponsored by MDPI "Sensors" with 300 CHF. The fellowship is co-funded by Carnot LSI (https://carnot-lsi.com/) and ARTS (https://www.ic-arts.eu/) institutes for 36 months. Gross salary is approximately between 20K€ et 23K€ brut per year. The doctoral research will be co-advised by Céline Coutrix (http://iihm.imag.fr/coutrix/) and William Delamare (https://profils.estia.fr/w.delamare/) * Scientific Context The student is expected to integrate both the IIHM and the ESTIA-Recherche research groups (around 18 months each). The IIHM group is concerned with the design, implementation, and evaluation of interaction techniques that are effective, usable, and enjoyable. The group is present in the main Human-Computer Interaction conferences: CHI, UIST, AVI, Interact, EICS, etc. It has long-lasting connections to other research groups in France and abroad, and is well connected to the industry. IIHM is part of the LIG lab, which is equipped with the latest machines for physical fabrication of prototypes. ESTIA-Recherche mobilizes multiple disciplines to address the concept of intelligent and empowering interfaces for the engineering of complex systems. The multidisciplinary team focuses on scientific, technological, and societal themes to respond to cross-functional projects. ESTIA-Recherche hence studies and designs Human-Human, Human-System, and System-System interactions to contribute to energy and digital transitions and to the evolution towards the industry of the future. * Research Plan The PhD’s objective is to imagine novel ways to interact with augmented objects that best leverages users’ expertise with the existing objects in their environment. The Internet of Things (IoT) started to replace our traditional objects, both personal (e.g., smart home) and professional (e.g., smart office), with connected objects including augmented capabilities. Users are already able to use voice or direct touch to interact with these objects. Yet, users already developed extensive expertise with their traditional objects’ current physical interfaces. The PhD student will explore how users’ expertise can transfer from the UI of traditional objects to novel remote UIs (deformable tangible interaction, or mid-air inputs for instance). * Candidate We seek candidates with profound interest in Human-Computer Interaction, strong motivation, and creativity. A successful candidate: - Has a strong master’s degree in computer science or another area related to Human-Computer Interaction, - Has excellent written and oral communication skills, - Has excellent software and/or hardware skills. There are three submission deadlines per year, and authors can choose when to submit. Papers follow the traditional journal model of reviewing: papers may be accepted after submission and review, or may be recommended for revisions and re-submission to the next round to enable authors to refine papers based on reviewer recommendations. Submissions for the journal of this venue should present original and mature research work within the scope of the conference. Technical Notes are shorter, more focused contributions, that focus specifically on system contributions and technical work. Elucidating technical details of complex interactive systems, preferably ensuring the work can be reproduced or put to practice, is a primary objective of a Technical Note. Tech Notes require an illustrative example of the system, and they can, but do not need to, be validated by formal user evaluations or user studies. Validation can also be done through e.g. simulation, feasibility, or comparisons.Tech Notes will be judged on their technical merits and relevance to interactive systems concerns. There are no length restrictions on Full Papers and Technical Notes, nor any limit to the number of references that may be included. We advise authors to ensure the length of their papers is in function of the contributions. Concise and clear is often to be preferred above lengthy and verbose. MobileHCI'23 - Open places in the Organizing Comiittee

Dear all, We have a few open positions in the Organizing Committee (OC) of ACM MobileHCI’23, which is to be held in Athens, Greece, on 26-29 September 2023. As promised in our bid, to increase representation from diverse backgrounds in the OC, these positions will be filled by an open call to the community. High-quality original submissions that address such future issues, show the design and evaluation in (near-) real scenarios, explain how to benchmark systems, and outline the education and training procedures for acquiring new perceptual skills while using such systems are welcome. Research and technical papers are expected to present significant and original contributions validated with the targeted end-users. Submissions should clearly state the progress beyond the existing state-of- the-art and the expected societal benefits of the developed technology. When possible, validate scenarios with the target user groups and well-identified technology readiness levels (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technology_readiness_level) should be at least outlined. Submissions We invite Research and Technical papers, up to 15 pages, describing original unpublished research, making a substantial contribution to the research field. All submissions will be reviewed by the Program Committee. As was the case for IHAW 2021, the proceedings of IHAW 2022 will be published by Springer in the Communications in Computer and Information Science (CCIS) series (https://www.springer.com/series/7899) and will be presented in the technical sessions of the conference. The Best Paper Award is sponsored by MDPI "Sensors" with 300 CHF. The authors of the best papers accepted and presented at IHAW2022 will be invited to submit extended versions of their papers for further review and possible inclusion in either of two Journal Special Issues that will be organised with SN Computer Science (Springer) and Smart Health (Elsevier). Our pre-workshop plans propose asynchronous activities to support networking and to understand participants’ preferences and needs. Workshop outcomes will help fill a gap in the available guidelines on including people with intellectual disabilities in research, which should lead to more accessible protocols and personalised and better fit-for-purpose technologies.
