Dear colleagues, The IFIP WG 2.7/13.4 on User Interface Engineering is happy to announce the fourth UI Engineering Live Talks episode. This month, *Fabio Paternò* explores the challenges of human control in a world of IoT and AI, focusing on innovative ways to empower users to manage automation in their daily lives without programming skills. The talk will be given on *November 30, 15:00 CET* Title: Humanations: A new understanding of human/automation interaction Speaker: Fabio Paternò Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwiD81lunWs Abstract: How people interact with digital technologies is currently caught between the Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence. In both trends, human control over technology is jeopardized. At the same time, little is happening in terms of innovating how we think and build automations. This is despite the current availability of various types of devices and modalities for supporting user interactions. This talk will discuss concepts and methods that can be useful to address the core challenges of human control over automations involving people, objects, devices, services, and robots. The goal is to identify innovative approaches to support end users, even without programming experience, to understand, create or modify the automations in their daily environments, augmenting human capabilities in managing automations through effective modalities, relevant analytics, explanations, and intelligent recommendations. Short bio: Fabio Paternò is Research Director at the Italian National Research Council, where he leads the Laboratory on Human Interfaces in Information Systems at the Information Science and Technologies Institute, in Pisa. He has been a principal investigator in several international and national projects, mainly in the area of Human-Computer Interaction. His current research interests are Interactive Smart Spaces, Accessibility, End-User Development, Human-centered Artificial Intelligence, and Humanoid Robots.
