CALL FOR PAPERS
The 15th International Workshop on Personalized Access to Cultural Heritage
(PATCH 2024)
Held in conjunction with ACM UMAP 2024 - Cagliari, Italy.
https://patch2024.di.unito.it/
Important dates:
April 28, 2024: paper submission (strict)
April 24, 2024: paper submission
May 8, 2024: notification to authors
May 16, 2024: camera-ready due
The workshop will be in person or hybrid.
Abstract and Topics
Following the successful series of PATCH workshops, PATCH 2024 will be
again the meeting point between state-of-the-art cultural heritage research
and personalization – using any kind of technology, while focusing on
ubiquitous and adaptive scenarios, to enhance the personal experience in
cultural heritage sites. The workshop is aimed at bringing together,
physically and/or virtually, researchers and practitioners who are working
on various aspects of cultural heritage and are interested in exploring the
potential of state of the art mobile technology (onsite as well as online)
to enhance the CH visit experience. The expected result of the workshop is
a sharing and discussing novel ideas and creating a multidisciplinary
research agenda that will inform future research directions and hopefully,
forge some research collaborations.
Motivation
Cultural heritage (CH) has traditionally been a privileged area for
personalization research, as highlighted by the many H2020 calls on this
topic. Visitors come to cultural heritage sites willing to experience and
learn new things, usually without a clear idea of what to expect. CH sites
are typically rich in objects and information; much more than the visitor
can absorb during the limited time of a visit. Cultural Heritage
exploration and fruition are central aspects to value the richness of the
territory and the history of our countries. The research on this topic is
very active and continuously expanding towards new topics, such as the
integration of cultural and natural heritage exploration, the extension to
novel interaction means (e.g., haptic user interfaces and IoT), ambient
intelligence, etc.
We invite cultural heritage professionals and researchers to join us to
discuss findings and trends on personalisation of cultural heritage in the
broadest sense, from online and remote cultural access to onsite visit,
from individuals to groups, from tangible to virtual and robotic mediation.

ABSTRACT
=========
Adaptive and personalized systems have become pervasive technologies,
gradually playing an increasingly important role in our daily lives.
Indeed, we are now accustomed to interacting with algorithms that leverage
the power of Language Models (LLMs) to assist us in various scenarios. From
services suggesting music or movies to personal assistants proactively
supporting us in complex decision-making tasks. As these technologies
continue to shape our everyday experiences,
it becomes imperative to ensure that the internal mechanisms guiding these
algorithms are transparent and comprehensible. The EU General Data
Protection Regulation (GDPR) recognizes the users' right to explanation
when confronted with intelligent systems, highlighting the significance of
this aspect.
Regrettably, current research often prioritizes the maximization of
personalization strategy effectiveness, such as recommendation accuracy, at
the expense of model explainability.
To address this concern, the workshop aims to provide a platform for
in-depth discussions on challenges, problems, and innovative research
approaches in the field. The workshop will specifically focus on
investigating the role of transparency and explainability in recent
methodologies for constructing user models and developing personalized and
adaptive systems.
By bringing together researchers and practitioners, the workshop aims to
foster collaboration, knowledge exchange, and the development of novel
solutions. Through this collective effort, we can advance the understanding
and implementation of transparent and interpretable approaches in adaptive
and personalized systems, including integrating Language Models (LLMs) to
enhance transparency and enable users to comprehend the internal mechanisms
guiding these systems.

*DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT CONTEXT and GOALS*
Smart Learning Ecosystems should perform at best on all the dimensions
that contribute to the well-being of students and all players involved
in the development of a learning process: /infrastructures, food,
environment, info/admin services, mobility, safety, social interaction,
satisfaction, challenges, self-fulfillment/. Being inspired by the flow
theory and by the Maslow’s pyramid, we can state that: ecosystems are
smart when /“individuals that take part in the local processes achieve a
high level of skills and, at the same time, are also strongly motivated
and engaged by continuous and adequate challenges, provided that their
primary needs are reasonably satisfied”./
The smartness of learning ecosystems, thus, is not created merely
through the availability of digital infrastructures and applications.
When technologies are both available and adopted enthusiastically, they
can start to make a difference in both simplifying and accelerating
progress toward the achievement of system smartness. One has to keep in
mind, however, that technologies are smart not because they are capable
of replacing human reasoning but, rather because they can help towards
achieving a people centered smartness, through streamlining mundane
organisational tasks, and enhancing the skills of all actors involved in
learning processes.
Our duty, with the help of technology, is to support learning ecosystems
(formal, informal, non-formal) to develop their people centered
smartness towards becoming incubators of social innovation and engines
of sustainable regional development./Smartness is a goal/ and we can
support our learning ecosystems along the process to achieve it by
proposing solutions capable to solve or mitigate problems that prevent
the learning ecosystems to be people centered.
We expect students, wishing to take part in the contest, to analyze
their learning ecosystem, detect problems and find solutions that can
help their, and as well other learning ecosystems, to get smarter.
Proposals submitted to this call are expected to address thesame general
themes of the call for papers of the conference, namely:
* places for smart education,
* people in place centered design for smart education,
* supportive learning technologies and tools for smart education.

26th ACM International Conference on Multimodal Interaction
(4-8 Nov 2024)
Dear colleague,
The deadline for paper submissions for ICMI 2024 is around the corner.
https://icmi.acm.org/2024/call-for-papers/https://new.precisionconference.com/submissions/icmi24a
The 26th International Conference on Multimodal Interaction (ICMI 2024) will be held in San José, Costa Rica. ICMI is the premier international forum that brings together multimodal artificial intelligence (AI) and social interaction research. Multimodal AI encompasses technical challenges in machine learning and computational modeling such as representations, fusion, data, and systems. The study of social interactions encompasses both human-human interactions and human-computer interactions. A unique aspect of ICMI is its multidisciplinary nature which values both scientific discoveries and technical modelling achievements, with an eye towards impactful applications for the good of people and society.
Novelty will be assessed along two dimensions: scientific novelty and technical novelty. Accepted papers at ICMI 2024 will need to be novel along one of the two dimensions:
* Scientific Novelty: Papers should bring new scientific knowledge about human social interactions, including human-computer interactions. For example, discovering new behavioral markers that are predictive of mental health or how new behavioral patterns relate to children’s interactions during learning. It is the responsibility of the authors to perform a proper literature review and clearly discuss the novelty in the scientific discoveries made in their paper.
* Technical Novelty: Papers should propose novelty in their computational approach for recognizing, generating or modeling multimodal data. Examples include: novelty in the learning and prediction algorithms, in the neural architecture, or in the data representation. Novelty can also be associated with new usages of an existing approach.
Commitment to ethical conduct is required and submissions must adhere to ethical standards in particular when human-derived data are employed. Authors are encouraged to read the ACM Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct (https://ethics.acm.org/).
ICMI 2024 conference theme:
The theme of this year’s ICMI conference revolves around “Equitability and environmental sustainability in multimodal interaction technologies.” The focus is on exploring how multimodal systems and multimodal interactive applications can serve as tools to bridge the digital divide, particularly in underserved communities and countries, with a specific emphasis on those in Latin America and the Caribbean. The conference aims to delve into the design principles that can render multimodal systems more equitable and sustainable in applications such as health and education, thereby catalyzing positive transformations in development for historically marginalized groups, including racial/ethnic minorities and indigenous peoples. Moreover, there is a crucial exploration of the intersection between multimodal interaction technologies and environmental sustainability. This involves examining how these technologies can be crafted to comprehend, disseminate, and mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change, especially in the Latin America and Caribbean region. The conference endeavors to explore the potential of multimodal systems in fostering community resilience, raising awareness, and facilitating education related to climate change, thereby contributing to a holistic approach that encompasses both social and environmental dimensions.
Additional topics of interest include but are not limited to:
* Affective computing and interaction
* Cognitive modeling and multimodal interaction
* Gesture, touch and haptics
* Healthcare, assistive technologies
* Human communication dynamics
* Human-robot/agent multimodal interaction
* Human-centered A.I. and ethics
* Interaction with smart environment
* Machine learning for multimodal interaction
* Mobile multimodal systems
* Multimodal behaviour generation
* Multimodal datasets and validation
* Multimodal dialogue modeling
* Multimodal fusion and representation
* Multimodal interactive applications

* Cloud security and privacy concerns on all levels of the Cloud stack
* Fog and Edge Computing, and all other system types in the Cloud-Edge Compute Continuum
* Everything as a Service
* Non-technical aspects of Cloud Computing, e.g., Cloud governance or cloud economics
For a full list of the topics, please visit https://conferences.computer.org/IC2E/2024/.
IC2E is looking for the following three types of paper submissions:
* Research papers describe original well-evaluated research. Novelty is a key criterion in the review process.
* Vision papers describe speculative but well-reasoned and inspiring papers. Here, the insights and clarity of the vision are of key concern.
* Industry and experience papers describe how existing research has been transferred into practice. The review focus is on the lessons learned, including those relevant for researchers.
Research and vision papers should be submitted to the Research Track, industry and experience papers to the Industry Track. Vision papers should have "(Vision Paper)" as a subtitle on the first page.
###SUBMISSION###
Authors must submit full and short papers in PDF via the Web submission form at EasyChair (https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=ic2e2024), upon selecting Research Track or Industry Track options. Both Research Track and Industry Track papers should use the IEEE Manuscript Template for Conference Proceedings for formatting. LaTeX users must use \documentclass[10pt,conference]{IEEEtran}, without including the compsoc or compsocconf options. As reviewers often ask for additional content, IC2E differentiates between paper formatting for reviewing and for the final published version:
* Full papers: For reviewing, full papers (including figures and tables) should not exceed 9 double-column pages; references can be additional pages. For the final published version, full papers are limited to a total of 12 double-column pages including everything.
* Short papers: For reviewing, short papers are limited to 5 pages, not including references, and should be clearly marked as such in the title. For the final published version, short papers are limited to 8 pages, including everything.
IC2E supports Open Science practices. Therefore, authors are strongly encouraged to publish software and data sets as open-source/data.
All submitted manuscripts will be peer-reviewed. Depending on the paper type, submissions will be judged on correctness, originality, technical strength, significance, quality of presentation, and interest and relevance to the conference scope. Submitted manuscripts must contain original contributions, and their contributions must not have appeared in or be under consideration for publication in another workshop, conference, or journal. Accepted papers will be published by the IEEE Computer Society Conference Publishing Services (EI indexed).
